KCV & Farm

The Khayelihle Childrens Village located on the outskirts of Zimbabwe's second largest city Bulawayo, currently accommodates 90 children in four houses on a 270 acre property. While most of the children come from an abandoned background, a major contributor to the number of orphans is the HIV/AIDS pandemic where one in five people in Zimbabwe are HIV positive.

Most of the new orphans over recent years are abandoned babies who have been left to die because their mothers could not afford to keep them. Each of these children have multiple sponsors in NZ, Australia and the US.The Khayelihle Childrens Village now has a preschool building thanks to a donation from the United States and the building doubles as a Church on Sundays as KCV has found it difficult to transport 84 children to church each Sunday. The church activities reach out to neighbours as the nearest Church is 15km from the farms. At present 16 neighbours are joining the KCV village. It is always good fun spending time with the pre-schoolers and visitors are encouraged to ask the children questions. They are always ready to sing a song to any visitors.

NZ dairy farmers Paul & judith Todd have been busy establishing a dairy farm at KCV. During the later part of 2010, a further 10 hectares of land has been ploughed and sown into maize and sorghum.  About half of this area will be used by the staff and children while the other half will go into silage for feed for the cows  The farm is currently milking 20 cows who produce enough milk for the children and some for sale to help village finances. Current income from surplus milk is around NZ$3,000/month and this is an immensely valuable contribution towards the regular orphanage expenses. It is hoped that the farm operations will continue to expand and  the dairy herd will be expanded as more land is brought into production.

These children are from the same family. Their mother passed away and their critically ill father was taken away by relatives leaving the children vulnerable. The children have been living in a semi-built house with no toilet, water or electricity and they were looked after by Nester who is the oldest of them all. The Department of Social Welfare, after learning of their plight, placed them at KCV.
